Quaker Meeting House facility

Winter 2016

A Quaker Meeting house in Eugene, Oregon

I was tasked with designing a Quaker Meeting house in what was originally a children's gymnastic studio the Whitaker District in Eugene, Oregon. Our facility was to include also a meeting hall, library, social hall, classrooms, and a LGBTQIA outreach program. Much of my inspiration came from transforming the concept of the a familiar, comfortable place, that was also synonymous with the Quaker values of simplicity & light.

Floor Plan

The overall layout of the quaker meeting house complex was to design a box within a larger volume. I wanted to make the space like a mini-city that included major thoroughfares through the most public areas of the complex, and as the user travels further into the space, those thoroughfares turn into smaller alleyways that added a feeling of privacy and safety.

the library

The library is an important aspect in the quaker meeting house complex because it is a space where people come to learn & reflect & share information between the Friends.
